In 1979 Sam and Hazel DeBartolo, along with Marion Wyles, saw a need in the Brimfield Community for residents needing grocery assistance. Partnering with the Faith United Methodist Church, Change for Hunger for Portage County, and the Akron Canton Food Bank, the Brimfield Community Cupboard was organized and began providing grocery assistance for Brimfield families. Sam continued to serve the Cupboard until he passed away in 2010, then Hazel served until her retirement on July 1, 2014. Today the Brimfield Community Cupboard serves approximately 100 Brimfield families per month and is overseen by three Trustees, Sue Fields, Patti Harjung, and Robert Keller. The Cupboard is funded by donations and 100% of the donations are used to purchase groceries and personal care items for the recipients. The Faith United Methodist Church donates the shelter and utilities for the Cupboard. The all volunteer staff assists residents on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Donations are graciously accepted at the Brimfield Police Department, 1287 Tallmadge Rd., Brimfield from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
